"Hold is is this glove" was an accidental corruption of "How old is this globe" originally posted by Ambitious_Pilgrim (formerly DerpyDerpkins)

Background

On September 14th, 2016, Ambitious_Pilgrim posted a thread in Roblox Talk titled ">looking at a globe in school" in which he recalls seeing an outdated globe while he was at school that still labeled what is now Russia as "soviet socialist republics [sic]". However, rather than posting "how old is this globe" his post came out as "hold is is this glove", most likely due to autocorrect.[1]

Response

Other forumers found the post and Ambitious_Pilgrim's attempt to correct the phrase as "how old is this glove" humourous and began to repost the phrase repeatedly. The user injury began bumping the thread regularly. On November 25th, 2016, the user twisteddddd began bumping the thread approximately once every 30 seconds adding over 10 pages to the thread. As of November 25th, 2016, the thread has been locked and has reached a length of 22 pages.

Variations

Variations within the original thread include vertical typing, wide text, translations in several languages by POLLICE911 and several changes in the syntax of the sentence. On October 21st, 2016, while the Roblox site was being affected by DDoS attacks, there were multiple posts parodying "hold is is this glove" with some referring to the phrase as a dead meme.[2][3][4][5]
